Veteran's Day Closures
City of Austin offices are closed today for Veteran's Day. But garbage, recycling and yard trimmings collection will be picked up as usual. All recreation centers, cultural centers, and senior centers are closed.
Veteran's Day Parade
Central Texans will honor the men and women who have served our country at various events today. Austin's Veteran's Day Parade downtown will take place between 9:15 and 11 a.m. Expect road closures along parts of Congress Avenue. For more detailed road closure information click here.
The Letter Project
These days it’s a lot easier for military men and women to send loved ones emails from overseas. But in past wars, families waited for handwritten letters from their soldiers.
Austin writer Jack Woodville London started the Letter Project about a year ago. It’s an effort to collect letters to and from military service members in conflicts as far back as the Civil War. London recently spoke to Matt Largey for KUT. Listen to that interview here.
Federal Aid for Hermine
FEMA may have denied Texas assistance for Tropical Storm Hermine, but Texans will get some federal aid. Hermine dropped more than a foot of rain in some parts of Central Texas in September. The U.S. Small Business Administration has granted Governor Rick Perry’s request for disaster assistance.
Homeowners, renters and businesses in 18 counties will be able to apply for low- interest loans to repair damages. Travis, Bastrop and Williamson County are on the list.
Dense Fog Advisory
Keep in mind for your morning commute: the National Weather Service has issued a Dense Fog Advisory for most of Central Texas. The advisory is in effect until 10 a.m.
SOUTHEASTERLY FLOW FROM THE GULF OF MEXICO HAS BROUGHT LOW LEVEL MOISTURE TO SOUTH CENTRAL TEXAS. UNDER CLEAR SKIES FOG HAS FORMED ACROSS THE EASTERN PART OF THE REGION. THERE WILL BE AREAS OF DENSE FOG WITH VISIBILITY DROPPING BELOW ONE QUARTER MILE IN A FEW SPOTS THIS MORNING.
