Austin Police say an officer shot and killed a man Thursday night.

10:50 a.m. UPDATE--Austin Police have identified the man shot to death by an APD officer who was stabbed in the neck during a struggle in north Austin late last night.  Maurice Pierce, who was one of the men charged in the "Yogurt Shop Murders" of 1991, reportedly died at the scene near Parmer Lane and McNeil Road.  Pierce was charged in 1999 with the rape and murder of four teenage girls at a north Austin yogurt shop.   He was later cleared of the charges.

An APD spokesperson tells KUT News that the officer involved in the shooting, Frank Wilson,  is out of surgery at a Round Rock hospital and resting comfortably after being stabbed in the neck during the fight with Pierce.

EARLIER--An Austin police officer shot and killed a suspect late Thursday night, after an altercation in which the suspect stabbed the officer. Frank Wilson and another officer tried to pull over a car that ran a stop sign in Northwest Austin near Parmer and McNeil. The driver got out of the car and started running and then got into a fight with Wilson. The suspect reportedly grabbed Wilson’s knife and stabbed him. Wilson then shot the suspect, who died at the scene.  Wilson is being treated for serious injuries at a hospital in Round Rock.
