Cesar Chavez Traffic Closures
Traffic on Cesar Chavez Street will be disrupted this morning as crews repair a broken water main.
Early this morning, the water main that serves businesses on Cesar Chavez between Brazos Street and Trinity Street burst. Eastbound traffic between Congress Avenue and Red River Street is down to one lane. Westbound traffic will be detoured northbound on Brazos Street, then westbound on Second Street.
Lane changes and detours will be in effect until work is completed.
Several Festivals Dot Austin Area
This weekend brings a smorgasbord of possibilities for Austinites looking for unconventional activities.
Luling, Texas, 45 miles southeast of Austin, is hosting the annual Watermelon Thump this weekend. Festivities including melon judging, seed spitting, coronation of this year’s Thump Queen and more started Thursday and continue until Sunday. Admissions to the thump vary by day.
DIY food production advocate Marjory Wildcraft and friends are hosting a Bug Festival this Saturday in Zilker Park. The BYOB (bring your own bug) party will teach entomophagy, or the practice of eating bugs. The group will also have a potluck of “normal” food. The party starts at 5:30p p.m. near the rock amphitheater and is $5 for adults and free for kids.
On Sunday, Beer Balls Austin brings together Austin chefs and local breweries to raise funds for the Shirts for a Cure movement. Chefs will provide meatballs showcasing their culinary abilities and breweries will provide craft beers to help wash down the hors d’oeuvres. The event benefits the Syrentha J. Savio Endowment. Tickets start $45. The event starts Sunday afternoon at The Belmont.
Still looking for something weirder than melons, bugs or beer balls? Sunday sees a celebration of departed Austin icon Leslie Cochran at Lipstick 24. The Leslie Fest benefits Hospice Austin’s Christopher House with more than two dozen bands on what would have been Cochran’s 61st birthday. While there’s a free, all-ages area with food and activities, admission into the bar is reserved for those 21 and older. Tickets are $10 – with discounts for dressing up.
LeBron Leads Heat to Title
With a 121 to 106 finish against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Miami Heat claimed the NBA Championship last night.
The Heat nearly swept the series, losing only the first game of a possible seven, but taking the next four.
Kevin Durant, former UT student and the Thunder’s forward, scored 32 points last night, but could not help his team overcome the Heat. LeBron James’s contribution included 26 points and a triple double. Two other Heat players scored in double digits: Chris Bosh scored 23 points, while Dwayne Wade brought in 20.
This is the Heat’s second title, following a championship in 2006.
