Infographic: How Austin's City Council Districts Will Get Drawn

Filipa Rodrigues for KUT News

In November, voters approved a historic change to Austin’s form of government.

For most of Austin’s modern history, the city council has been elected citywide, or at-large. With the passage of Proposition 3 last year, voters approved a change to geographic representation, where an independent citizens commission will create 10 city council districts.

While discussion will ultimately revolve around the districts themselves, that’s still quite a way off. Instead, the city auditor is looking for volunteers to serve on a review panel that will sort through applicants that may ultimately serve on the panel that will draw the district lines.

As specified in the city charter language that voters approved in November, redistricting is a large process with many moving parts. KUT News has created an infographic showing all the steps that have to occur before districts are even considered.

You can learn more about the redistricting process on the City Auditor’s “10 ONE” outreach site
