Who knew Kangaroos are Longhorns were related?

This year marks the 30th anniversary of sisterhood between Austin and Adelaide, Australia, one of Austin’s 12 sister cities.

Deputy Lord Mayor Michael Llewellyn-Smith of Adelaide spoke today at City Hall. He reminisced of the long relationship between the two cities, in particular a time when he had BBQ with Lady Bird Johnson.

Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell declared May 16-24, Austin and Adelaide's  "Sister City Days."

“Our longstanding friendship is based on many commonalities. Both are hill country capital cities, performing and visual art centers, both strong technologies and advanced manufacturing sectors and now both are home to VA super car series,” Leffingwell said.

Cities however do not have to be similar to Austin in order to join in on the sisterhood. In fact, Austin has sister cities in every continent except for Antarctica. The Sister Cities Program manages relationships with different cities abroad to "promote Austin's educational, cultural and economic presence in the international community."
