What's Open, What's Closed and What's Going on to Honor Veterans
Today is Veterans Day, and with that in mind we've got a rundown of all the parades, speeches and other events to honor Central Texas veterans in Austin, Georgetown and San Marcos.
In addition, we've got the full list of city office closures as employees observe Veterans Day. Check out the full list of events and closures below. Austin City Offices Closed for Veterans Day; Trash Pickup Remains on Schedule
City of Austin administrative offices and other government facilities will be closed in observance of Veterans Day. Normal business hours will resume tomorrow.
Closures will include City Council offices, City Hall and Austin Public Libraries. Trash, recycling and yard trimmings collection for Austin Resource Recovery customers will remain on regular schedules.
The City of Austin Household Hazardous Waste facility will be open, although Resource Recovery offices will be closed. All recreation, cultural and senior centers will also be closed.
The Austin Animal Center, Nature and Science Center, Zilker Botanical Garden, golf and tennis operations, Bartholomew Pool, Barton Springs Pool and Stacy Pools will be open today.
Capital Metro to Operate Regular Service on Veterans Day
Some Capital Metro routes will be detoured during the annual Veteran’s Day Parade in downtown Austin, but, other than those delays, Capital Metro will be operating its regular schedules for all services on Veterans Day.
Customers should refer to the regular bus and rail schedules when planning their trips. MetroAccess service will also be operating normal service.
Austin Veterans Day Parade
The annual Veterans Day Parade will be today along Congress Avenue in Austin as the city observes Veterans Day.
The parade starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge and travels north to the State Capitol.
A memorial ceremony at the Capitol begins at 11 a.m.
This year’s Grand Marshals are Mayor Lee Leffingwell, a retired Navy Commander; and 108-year-old Richard Overton, the nation’s oldest World War II veteran.
Austin ISD Will Give Honorary Diplomas
On Veterans Day, Austin ISD will award veterans who served in the armed forces without finishing high school belated diplomas at an award ceremony at 2 p.m. at McCallum High School.
AISD Board President Vincent Torres and Interim Superintendent Paul Cruz will also speak.
ACC Recognizes Veterans Day
The Austin Community College District will host Veterans Day events at multiple campuses today to honor area veterans.
- The ACC Elgin Campus will host a MIA/POW flag raising from noon-2 p.m. today at the Amphitheater. The event will include refreshments, music and prizes.
- Student Life, the student affairs department at the Cypress Creek ACC Campus, will host a WWII veteran speaker from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the Student Commons of Building 1000, along with music, free barbecue and drinks.
- ACC Student Veterans Association will gather with other veterans and members of the ACC community from 6-8 p.m. at the Eastview Campus. The event hopes to honor regional veterans and encourage them to pursue a higher education. Registration is available online.
Sun City Texas Veterans Day Ceremony in Georgetown
The annual Veterans Day Ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. today at the Georgetown-Williamson County Veterans Memorial.
The Georgetown High School band, orchestra and choir will provide music beginning at 10:45 a.m. The guest speaker will be Lt. Gen. Sean B. MacFarland, Commanding General, III Corps and Fort Hood. All veterans and their families attending will be recognized and several veterans will participate in the program.
Veterans Day in San Marcos
Central Texas Medical Center will host its annual Veterans Day today. The ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. in front of the hospital’s main campus at 1301 Wonder World Drive in San Marcos. The event will honor veterans with a color guard ceremony from the San Marcos High School’s Air Force JROTC. Music will be provided by The Kyle Sisters.
Texas State University's Student Foundation and Dean of Students Office will also host its annual Veterans Day Commemoration at 10:30 a.m. today on campus in The Quad. A wreath laying at the on-campus Veterans Garden will precede the commemoration at 10 a.m., followed by a reception and military exhibition at 11:15 a.m. in the LBJ Student Center.
