Family meals, lectures and musical entertainment. These are a few of the experiences you might get at a beer garden in the 19th century.
Tonight, the Austin History Center is hosting an event celebrating the old-timey beer garden experience at Scholz Garten, which was established in 1866. It claims to be the oldest continuously operated business in Texas.
The Beer Garden Social starts tonight at 6 p.m., and is free and open to the public.
History center Manager Mike Miller said the purpose of the program is to recreate a typical experience of what it has been for folks who went to beer gardens in 1870s.
“The event tonight goes beyond beer. It’s more about history and food culture,” Miller said. “We will promote a couple of local brewers that brew in an old style.”
The Beer Garden Social will feature an exhibit on the history of brewing in Austin, two presentations on brewing, as well as a free concert.
This event is a part of a series of events related to the exhibit How to Prepare a Possum: 19th Century Cuisine in Austin at the Austin History Center.
