Interview: Susan Sarandon on Her Career, Family and New Phase of Life

Sarandon shared a picture of herself at Austin's Mexic-Arte Museum.

Academy Award-winning actress Susan Sarandon has a storied career of longer than four decades. She was in Austin this weekend to receive yet another accolade.

The Austin Film Festival honored Sarandon for her “extraordinary contribution to filmmaking.”

KUT’s Laura Rice talked with Sarandon shortly after she accepted her award.

On Being Honored for Her Overall Achievements:

"I would like it to be a mid-life achievement award because I get nervous getting on a plane after a life achievement award."

On Balancing Career and Family:

"I never felt like it was balanced. Between being a mom and trying to keep that going and having three kids under the age of seven at one point and then working. I think you have to forgive yourself for not being perfect when you try to multi-task and do a lot of things and I've just been very lucky."

On Working With Her Daughter – Actress Eva Amurri:

"She wrote this treatment for a TV series about a mother and a daughter that's kind of loosely based on exaggerated versions of us. And she showed it to me and it was a good idea and an usual idea. And I just thought, 'when do you get a chance to get to know your children as grown ups?' – except on the holidays or whatever. But to actually work with people that you love is so so special."

On Her New Phase of Life:

"I have the time now to kind of rediscover what I want to do without being home at 6 o'clock to give them dinner, without sitting down to do homework, without constantly making sure they're in at night and all of those things. It has freed me up considerably."
