April is National Poetry Month, a time when we celebrate poetry and recognize how it has shaped American culture. This year, KUT is participating in National Poetry Month by sharing poems written by students in the Blank Page creative writing programs at Kealing and Fulmore Middle Schools and the Writers' Workshop at Rawson Saunders School. You can read the and listen to the poems here, and you can also listen to the poems read on KUT 90.5 FM throughout the month of April.

We Hold On

Read by Laurie Viault

The seasonings are tested and pushed back far into the cabinet

never to be used again.

An opened bag of marshmallows grow stale

Leftovers that have slid off the refrigerator shelf

are now forever unreachable.

Slowly expiring salad dressings lined up in an orderly fashion

Boots that are two sizes too small, relaxed by time

PJ’s that have shrunk by every dream dremt

Shirts with holes that are also the softest

Overlooked photos on phones

Emails, never bothered to be opened

Contacts never contacted

Locked away and hidden

Seen and unseen

Ever present

We hold on
