Things in Austin can seem pretty weird to someone visiting for the first time – particularly if you're from Kazakhstan, the former Soviet Union country located between Russia and China.  

We came to Austin on a professional fellowship in October to learn more about American journalism. Back home, we cover politics, human rights and media freedom for independent news outlets. 

When we first arrived, we found several unusual things we decided to explore.
