Lawmakers are gearing up for a likely special session, but that hasn’t stopped them from trying to squeeze as many bills as they can out of the regular session.
But as the Sine Die bell nearly tolls, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst has gone as far to personally ask the state’s highest executive for a special session.
This afternoon, Lt. Gov. Dewhurst sent a letter to House Speaker Joe Straus and Gov. Rick Perry outlining his call for a special session that covers abortion, the AP reports.
Over the weekend, lawmakers took on two gun-centric bills. They approved a measure allowing students who are concealed handgun license holders to bring guns on college campuses, but only in their cars. The bill awaiting a signature from Gov. Perry.
The other bill would have given lawmakers, Congressmen and prosecuting attorneys the ability to carry handguns anywhere. That bill was defeated.
Lawmakers also passed a bill that limits the use of drone photography on private land. The bill would create a misdemeanor for knowingly filming on private property with a drone. Lawmakers say it’s intended to keep up with technological developments that threaten privacy.
