Perry to Push for Balanced Budget Amendment

Just a day before delivering a speech on his proposal for a flat income tax and plan to balance the federal budget, Gov. Rick Perry has released details in an Op-Ed in the Wall Street Journal. Perry will reveal more about the plan in a South Carolina speech today. KUT's Ben Philpott is on the road with the Perry campaign.

AISD Meeting

The Austin Independent School Board met last night to discuss issues of overcrowding in some North Central Austin schools. The Board also announced its unanimous decision to join a lawsuit against the state regarding how public education is funded in Texas. KUT's Nathan Bernier has more here.

World Series

The Texas Rangers defeated the St. Louis Cardinals, 4-2, last night in Game 5 of the 2011 World Series at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. The win gives Texas a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series. One more win would give the Rangers their first World Championship. But that won't be an easy task. Wednesday night's Game 5 will be at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.

Early Voting Continues

Early voting for ten new state constitutional amendments continues on through today. KUT's Matt Largey has more on a proposition to extend homestead exemption, and two county bond propositions for projects in Travis County. Early voting ends next Friday. The general election is November 8th.

Pedestrian Safety

APD has announced a cleverly-named initiative geared towards pedestrian safety. The Pedestrian Enforcement Safety Team, or PEST, will enforce regulations such as jaywalking, soliciting, and illegally crossing highways. The team has also released some safety tips, including to always walk on sidewalks, and never to "drink and walk." 17 pedestrians have been killed so far this year, according to police. The initiative runs through November 5th.
