AM Update: Migration from Mexico, AISD Negotiations, McLeroy Visits 'Colbert Report'
Migration from Mexico to U.S. at Net Zero — Or less
Are more Mexican immigrants leaving the United States than entering? Maybe. A new report by the Pew Hispanic Center found net migration from Mexico to the U.S. has stopped—and perhaps reversed.
In an analysis of censuses and other data from both countries, researchers determined 1.4 million Mexicans immigrated to the U.S. from 2005 to 2010. Over that same five-year period, 1.4 million Mexican immigrants and their U.S.-born children moved from America to Mexico.
That’s significantly different from the trend of the five-year period from 1995 to 2000. Then, about 3 million Mexicans immigrated to the United States and less than 700,000 returned to Mexico.
The report points to the downturn in the economy: there have been fewer jobs available, particularly in sectors like construction. The report also found factors including heightened border enforcement and a rise in deportations led to the turnaround.
Opportunity for Other Employee Groups in AISD Negotiations
Austin Independent School District board members voted last night to create a council of groups that represent employees. But only one group will have a seat at the negotiating table. The lead group would be elected by employees every two years.
Up until now, only Education Austin has had consultation powers. Education Austin represents members of several education unions. But it does not represent all employees.
The board voted 6 to 1 in favor of the change. One board member was absent and another abstained from the vote.
Watch McLeroy on 'Colbert Report'
Former member of the Texas State Board of Education Don McLeroy appeared on The Colbert Report last night.
McLeroy was a polarizing figure during his decade-plus tenure on the board. A Christian conservative and avowed creationist, McLeroy’s work on science standards dealing with issues like evolution drew scrutiny from around the world.
A new documentary about McLeroy’s last days on the education board, The Revisionaries, is playing at New York’s Tribeca Film Festival.
