Texas Longhorn football fans breathed a sigh of relief- a least for this week- as the 'Horns beat the Rice Owls 34-9 in the seasoner opener. Those who follow the Longhorns weren't sure what to expect tonight, with a revamped coaching staff, depth chart, and attitude, coming off last year's disappointing 5-7 season.

Starting quarterback Garrett Gilbert was 13 of  23 for 239 yards, one touchdown, and no interceptions. Freshman David Ash also saw some playing time at quarterback throughout the game. Coach Mack Brown put sophomore Case McCoy in at QB for the last few minutes of the game. The Horns host BYU next Saturday night. Kickoff is at 6:00 p.m. at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium. The Cougars squeaked by Ole Miss Saturday night 14-13.
