A group of Austin high school students is calling on fellow teens not to text and drive.

The Austin Youth Council is teaming up with AT&T to raise awareness about the dangers of driving while texting, with a car simulator that demonstrates how distracting texting can be.

Austin is one of the few cities in Texas that has a ban on texting and driving.

In announcing the awareness effort, Austin Youth Council member and Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired student Emily Newman spoke about the additional danger faced by people like her.

"People think that texting and driving is like driving blind, but what they don’t know is that some people are walking blind," Newman said.

This Saturday’s event is called "It Can Wait, Austin." It's at the Zach Theatre’s Nowlin Rehearsal Hall from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
