Austin’s new VA clinic opened this week, becoming the largest free-standing VA outpatient clinic in the U.S. The new, state-of-the-art clinic will to help accommodate Central Texas’s fast growing veteran population across 39 counties.
The clinic currently serves 23,000 veterans. The VA hopes to increase that number to 30,000 by 2025 with the expanded facilities, according to Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System spokeswoman Deborah Meyer.
The new building, located on Metropolis Drive in southeast Austin, will expand to include several new departments and provide additional room for existing services such as the Women’s Clinic. Overall, it's triple the size of the previous facility, which was so pressed for space that it had to lease out additional space at a clinic several miles away for mental health and home-based care services.
“It’s a brand new facility so it was built to our specifications and how to best serve our veterans,” Meyer says.
