An Unlikely Supreme Court Justice

Joy Diaz/KUT News

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor is in Austin today promoting her new memoir My Beloved World, which gives readers an intimate look into the circumstances that shaped her character.

Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and one of only four women ever to serve on the Supreme Court. KUT’s Joy Diaz talked with her about the life of a Supreme Court justice, a life she didn’t imagine in her wildest dreams.

I didn’t even know what the Supreme Court was when I was a kid. You have to dream about what you don’t know, and in fact, one of the purposes of this book, a small one but an important one, was to teach kids about what the Supreme Court is, to make them curious about it, at a much earlier age than I found out about it.

Sotomayor will be at BookPeople tonight at 6:30 for a reading and book signing.

Texas Standard reporter Joy Diaz has amassed a lengthy and highly recognized body of work in public media reporting. Prior to joining Texas Standard, Joy was a reporter with Austin NPR station KUT on and off since 2005. There, she covered city news and politics, education, healthcare and immigration.
