Good morning. The National Weather Service says Austin’s in for a sunny and mild day, with highs in the upper 70s.
Lead Story: The head of the University of Texas System is reiterating his opposition to allowing concealed firearms on college campuses.
Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa sent a letter to Gov. Rick Perry yesterday saying more guns on campus would likely increase the risk of injury or death, rather than increase safety.
State lawmakers will hold hearings on several bills today that would allow guns to be brought on college campuses, where – right now – they are banned. You can read more, including Cigarroa’s letter, at the Texas Tribune website.
TxDOT Toll Waiver: The Texas Department of Transportation is looking to ease congestion on I-35 by extending a discount on Central Texas toll roads to truck drivers.
If the Texas Transportation Commission approves the discount, it would be in effect for a year, starting next month.
A Barton Springs- Free SXSW: One of Austin’s biggest attractions isn’t available this year to all the visitors here for South by Southwest.
Barton Springs Pool is closed to swimmers while the city repairs an underground tunnel. The goal was to have the pool open again by now, but the repairs won’t be finished until after SXSW is over.
There is an alternative: Deep Eddy Pool, where there’s free swimming this Saturday.
