Cine Las Americas Film Fest Readies 16th Year In Austin

Filipa Rodrigues for KUT News

The film world is changing. That’s according to the principals behind the 16th annual Cine Las Americas International Film Festival, running April 16-21 here in Austin, Texas.

With more films coming out of Latin America and indigenous America, Austin audiences will have a range of films to choose from this year. Cine Las Americas includes features and shorts, documentaries and narratives, and works from emerging talents. All the films are subtitled in English.

For KUT, Cathy Byrd spoke with Cine Las Americas executive director Eugenio del Bosque and film program director Jean Anne Lauer.

Eugenio del Bosque: What happens is that 90 percent of the films will not be released theatrically in Austin, and 95 percent will not be released in the U.S. One of the big things about this festival is that people get to see things they wouldn’t be able to see otherwise.
Jean Anne Lauer: I’m not Latina and I love this film festival. I love everything that it brings to the table. We have films that are award-winning films on the highest level. We also have some broad comedies and some great documentaries. Most of our documentary features are free and open to the public. There’s something for everyone.
