April is National Poetry Month, a time when we celebrate poetry and recognize how it has shaped American culture. This year, KUT is participating in National Poetry Month by sharing poems written by students in the Blank Page creative writing programs at Kealing and Fulmore Middle Schools and the Writers' Workshop at Rawson Saunders School. You can read the and listen to the poems here, and you can also listen to the poems read on KUT 90.5 FM throughout the month of April.

Our Wings of Freedom

I yell to the kings

On behalf of the people who lost their light

Please, don't clip our wings!

Please cut away our strings

Don't shade us from the light!

I yell to the kings

Let our voices ring

I want to be a woman of flight

Please, don't clip my wings

I am not one of your rings

That squeeze your fingers tight!

I yell to the kings

Even the poor children

Feel the oppression of so much might

Please, don't clip our wings!

In the midst of our cold and dark springs

Each young girl and boy will fight

I yell to the kings

Please, don't clip our wings
