American Berserk Theatre's 'Subject to Control'

Kaci Beeler and Curtis Luciani have been performing together for many years, mostly as an improv duo. Those years of experience working and creating characters together eventually led to the creation of their new play Subject to Control. "This is just an attempt to take what we've been doing and push it in a direction that's daker and more theatrical," Luciani says.

While Subject to Control is a scripted theater piece, it still contains a few elements of improvisation and the script was created through a long, improv-heavy process. "We've been working for the past six months making it," Beeler says. "It started out as a really small couple of ideas, and now it's kind of exploded into this full world, which is something we can't do with improv, so it's really exciting."

The dark comedy touches on ideas of pseudoscience, cults, self-improvement, and human consciousness, using physical comedy, bits of improv, dance, and old-fashioned horseplay. And it takes place in a vaguely post-apocalyptic world. Beeler and Luciani admit that it's not an easy show to describe, but, in Luciani's words, "we could lead with the adjectives 'weird, dark and funny.' And so if that sounds good to you, then 'weird, dark and funny' is what we'll deliver."

Subject to Control runs through June 4 at Salvage Vanguard Theater.
