The Best Songs Ever ... This Week, May 25, 2018

Ed Gaspar for KUTX
Parquet Courts poses for a photo after performing in studio at KUTX in April.

The staff at our sister station KUTX scour the earth to bring listeners the best music. Each Friday, they share three of their favorite songs on Morning Edition.

"Wide Awaaaaake" by Parquet Courts

It’s a safe bet that when Parquet Courts puts out a new song, it’s gonna be an instant favorite of mine. The title track to the New York band's new album, Wide AWAAAAAKE (officially spelled that way), is no exception. The bass line is really what drives this song, and it makes it something special: punk rock you can dance to.

"Plastic Skeletons" by Jealous of the Birds

This next song kicks us across the pond to Belfast’s Naomi Hamilton, known by her moniker Jealous of the Birds. With Pixies influence shamelessly bleeding through, the song "Plastic Skeletons" is sick, and it comes from the upcoming EP, The Moths of What I Want Will Eat Me In My Sleep, which is out in July.

"Bright Robes" by Marmalakes

And finally, we bring it back home with Austin’s Marmalakes, the epitome of local indie music. Our current KUTX Artist of the Month is the brainchild of longtime friends Chase Weinacht and Josh Halpern, both of whom have been ubiquitous names and faces in the Austin music scene for a decade. Marmalakes' long-anticipated debut, full-length Please Don’t Stop, wasn’t gifted to the world until this year and for that gift, we are grateful, especially for the song "Bright Robes."
