Former El Paso Congressman Beto O’Rourke has dropped out of the crowded 2020 Democratic presidential race.
O’Rourke, who has been struggling to gain traction in a double-digit field, announced his decision in a blog post on Mediumlate Friday afternoon.
“Though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully,” O’Rourke wrote. “My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee. Acknowledging this now is in the best interests of those in the campaign; it is in the best interests of this party as we seek to unify around a nominee; and it is in the best interests of the country.”
O’Rourke ran an unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate against Ted Cruz last year. Cruz ultimately won the race by less than 3 percentage points. It was the closest U.S. Senate race in Texas in decades.
O'Rourke made no mention in his post about running against John Cornyn for the U.S. Senate in 2020.
