State Sen. Jane Nelson (R-Flower Mound) wants to restore some state funding of domestic violence-related services.
Last legislative session, lawmakers cut funding for Batterer Intervention and Prevention Programs or "BIPP" in half. It went from $2.5 million to $1.25 million.
General funding for main domestic violence services like shelters is at about $51 million.
Sen. Nelson talked about her commitment to family violence services during a press conference at the Texas Capitol this morning.
"I’m pleased to report the budget the Senate is sending to the House continues to support essential services. Some items still need to be added and I will continue to press for those priorities," Nelson said.
Sen. Nelson said people sent in purple postcards from across the state in support of family violence services. Those will be made available to lawmakers throughout the day.
Because the House and Senate will need to agree on the budget, shifting can occur on money allocated for domestic violence.
