Austin Independent School District Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde might be leaving the district for Dallas.

The district proposed changing the class schedule to save $21 million. Parents, teachers and students said that would limit the elective classes students could take.

In her state of the district address Tuesday, Stephanie Elizalde credited the mask mandate, in part, for the low number of COVID cases in Austin schools.

Students started a second school year during the pandemic with a mask mandate in place. A number of counties and school districts have defied the governor's ban on instituting them.

The district will take guidance from health officials into consideration before making a decision. AISD could lose funding if it goes remote-only, because that violates state policy.

More than 900 teachers in the district were denied medical accommodations to teach virtually. Superintendent Stephanie Elizalde says the policy changed as more students came back to in-person learning.
