The State of Texas is expected to execute its 500th death-row inmate – 52 year-old Kimberly McCarthy – this evening.

Texas electrocuted 361 offenders from 1952 to 1964, until the U.S. Supreme Court suspended all electrocutions in 1972 – declaring the practice cruel and unusual punishment.

Texas resumed executions two years later, adopting lethal injection as its means of execution. The state executed its first offender in 1982, and 498 more convicts since.
