AISD Makes Gains On TAKS

More than 80 percent of students in the Austin Independent School District passed the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills test, according to district data released to the Statesman. The district's board of trustees is expected to receive the data at  its meeting tonight.

District officials say despite the passing rate, a new high for AISD, several schools will receive the state's lowest designation from school progress: academically unacceptable. Only one AISD school got that designation last year.

Aquifer Authority May Declare New Water Restrictions

The Edwards Aquifer Authority says it is nearing a declaration of Stage 3 water restrictions.

The San Marcos Local News reports the water in the aquifer has fallen nearly 30 feet in the past 165 days - comparable to levels seen during the drought of 1996.

EAA Spokesperson Roland Ruiz said his organization will likely declare Stage 3 water restrictions sometime between Monday and Wednesday. Stage 3 means that EAA permit holders such as the City of San Marcos must reduce their permitted groundwater use by 35 percent.

Longhorns Play North Carolina Today

The Texas Longhorns Baseball team face elimination today in the College World Series. They play North Carolina this afternoon in Omaha at 1 p.m. A win would set up a Wednesday date with either Florida or Vanderbilt. A loss sends UT home from the double-elimination tournament.
