The City of Austin creates about 20 miles of new bike lanes a year, and that all goes towards the goal of 750 miles of bike lanes outlined in the City's Bicycle Plan.
It's been a few years since Austin updated its bike lane map, so this week it unveiled a new one. Annick Beaudet with Austin's Public Works Department said the new lanes were just one reason to pick up the map.
"It has lots of new features, such as grade information, so that if you want to take the longer flatter route, you can do so," Beaudet said. "New riders out there will be able to learn all those options as well."
The new map comes out just as the Texas Transportation Institute began advertising a new bike route smartphone app. The app uses GPS to track users biking routes. Cyclists can then upload their information to let researchers know what routes are popular in Austin . That's downloadable at Cycle Tracks Austin.
Austin's new bike map can be bought at bike shops or viewed for free here.
