Longhorns Top Cal in the Holiday Bowl

The UT Tower was lit burnt orange this morning. The Texas Longhorns won last night’s Holiday Bowl in San Diego. Texas beat the Cal Golden Bears 21-10. The Horn’s defense forced five turnovers. Quarterback David Ash threw one touchdown and caught a touchdown pass.

The win brings Texas’ overall record this season to 8-5. This was a return to a bowl game for the Horns who weren’t bowl-eligible last season.

Next Up, the Alamo Bowl...

Another Big 12 team plays tonight. The Baylor Bears will take on the University of Washington in the Alamo Bowl. The Bears finished up the regular season 9-3. The Washington Huskies finished 7-5.

Baylor’s going into the game with this year’s Heisman Trophy winner- quarterback Robert Griffin III. The Alamo Bowl starts at 8 p.m. in San Antonio.

Stratfor Providing Free ID Protection Services Following Security Breach

The Austin-based intelligence company Statfor is providing one year of identity protection services for free to its members whose personal information may have been compromised.

Some members who claim to be part of the hacker group Anonymous claimed responsibility Christmas weekend for stealing information and thousands of credit card numbers from people who subscribe to Stratfor’s intelligence reports. The company expects its website to be down for at least another week.

KUT recently spoke to a UT-Austin security expert about the online attack. You can check out that interview here.

Perry Makes His Case to Iowa Voters

Texas Governor Rick Perry has been traveling around Iowa the last couple of weeks trying to gain some momentum going into next week’s Iowa caucuses. A new CNN/Time Magazine poll out Wednesday had Governor Perry in 5th place.

KUT's Ben Philpott is on the road reporting from Iowa. He says Perry has been telling people they don’t have to settle for candidates with high poll numbers.

“I’ve got great respect for all those folks that are on the stage with me, the ones that are so-called front runners right now,” Perry told the crowd, “but you gotta ask yourself, if we replace a Democratic insider for a Republican insider, is Washington going to change?”

Perry's been asking Iowa Republicans for a second chance. And while the poll numbers certainly aren't in his favor, KUT's Ben Philpott reports Perry is getting some positive reactions from people at his tour stops. You can read or listen to the rest of this story at KUT.org.
