The Celebration
The City of Austin’s annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day march kicks off at 9 a.m.
The march will begin at the MLK statue on the University of Texas at Austin campus—near Speedway and West 23rd Street. Marchers will make their way to the State Capitol to see a Gospel music performance by Sweet Home Baptist Church Choir. Then, participants will walk down 11th Street to Huston-Tillotson University.
Several roads will be temporarily shut down to make way for the procession—including San Jacinto Boulevard on the UT campus, Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard between San Jacinto and Congress Avenue, Congress Avenue north of the capitol and 11th Street between Congress and Chalmers Avenue.

The MLK Community Festival will begin at Huston-Tillotson following the march. It will feature vendors and local music and is scheduled to last until 3 p.m.
MLK Day Closures
City of Austin offices are closed in recognition of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. But trash and recycling collection will remain on schedule.
Deep Eddy and Stacy pools will be open today—as will city-operated golf courses and tennis centers.
The Austin Animal Center will also be open. Today, it’s free to adopt most dogs.
The Austin Independent School District is also closed for the holiday.
Capital Metro is operating on a Saturday schedule. There will be no MetroRail, UT Shuttle or E-Bus service. But Capital Metro is offering increased frequency (every 15 minutes) of Route #2-Rosewood—which stops near the MLK March and Festival.
Other MLK Day Events
Taylor: Parade starts at 9 a.m. at the Robinson Park Pavilion. MLK Day program continues at City Hall, 400 Porter Street.
Georgetown: A seven-block march begins at noon at the Williamson County Courthouse and ends at Macedonia Baptist Church. A program begins at the church at 12:30 p.m.
Southwestern University: A program at Bishops Lounge, 5 p.m. featuring Rev. Don Brewington, chaplain of Huston-Tillotson University, music and spoken tributes to King. The university will continue to hold special events throughout the week. Click here for more information.
Public Gathering & Silent Vigil for the Fallen: Organized by Pro Peace Austin. The event features music and speakers as well as a silent vigil. This evening from 5:30 p.m. to 7:45 p.m. at Austin City Hall.
University Presbyterian Church: 2nd Annual Celebration Service in Commemoration of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. 7 p.m to 9 p.m. at University Presbyterian Church—2203 San Antonio Street, Austin.
