Good morning! The National Weather Service says Austin's in for a sunny and mild day, with highs in the mid-60s.
Lead Story: Many Austinites took time to celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. yesterday.
People gathered at the MLK statue on the UT campus Monday morning to kick off the city’s annual march honoring the civil rights leader. Austinite Stan Johnson says he was inspired to come out when he heard King’s “I Have a Dream” speech for the first time.
“It’s the first day or time I ever really come out for MLK because I never really took it seriously, you know what I mean?” Johnson says. “You know, I was born in like ’58. The “I Have a Dream Speech” was ’63. I just heard it, you know what I mean, for the first time this year. Really. I mean this past week. I just heard that speech.”
Austinite Korey Lewis was also among those who gathered on campus to remember the civil rights leader.
“He wanted equal rights for everyone, not just certain people,” he says. “Just as a family as we stick together, this is why we’re here today. We walking together side by side, all colors, creeds, origins, no matter where you came from. People out here just to support a man who had a dream of just being equal with everybody.”
The march took folks from UT to the state capitol and then to Huston-Tillotson University. You can watch a video produced by KUT on the march.
Another Texas Death in Algeria: Another Texan is confirmed dead in the terrorist attacks on a gas field in Algeria last week. It’s been reported Victor Lynn Lovelady of Nederland died during the standoff, which began last Wednesday when militants raided the natural gas complex where he worked.
Algerian officials say 23 hostages were killed, including Frederick Buttaccio of Katy, Texas, whose death was confirmed last week.
AISD Talks Bond Spending: The Austin school board will hold a public meeting tonight to discuss a nearly $900 million bond proposal.
The bond could authorize spending for run-of-the-mill renovation efforts and technology improvements, but it also proposes adding four new elementary schools to combat overcrowding.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 pm at Crockett High School in South Austin.
