'The Butler:' A Witness to Presidential History

University of Charleston

On this edition of In Black America, producer/host John L. Hanson Jr. speaks with Wil Haygood, Washington Post reporter and author of “The Butler: A Witness to History.”

Before he died on March 31, 2010. Eugene Allen was one of few men to have had personal interaction with the last twelve presidents of the United States. He was at the White House for 34 years and served eight presidents.

In 2008, on the campaign trail with then Sen. Barack Obama, Haygood was in search of a historic story about segregation and the White House. After receiving a tip, Haygood tracked down Eugene Allen, who began work in the White House as a pantry worker during the Truman administration. Haygood’s 2008 Washington Post article became an immediate sensation and a blockbuster movie

John L. Hanson is the producer and host of the nationally syndicated radio series In Black America. It’s heard on home station KUT at 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 6:30 a.m. Sundays — and weekly on close to 20 stations across the country. The weekly podcast of IBA, the only nationally broadcast Black-oriented public affairs radio program, is one of KUT’s most popular podcasts.
