April is National Poetry Month, a time when we celebrate poetry and recognize how it has shaped American culture. This year, KUT is participating in National Poetry Month by sharing poems written by students in the Blank Page creative writing programs at Kealing and Fulmore Middle Schools and the Writers' Workshop at Rawson Saunders School. You can read the and listen to the poems here, and you can also listen to the poems read on KUT 90.5 FM throughout the month of April.

Today

Read by Liz Lambert.

Today
is a Monday
is a Boringday
boring right now
but...

your friends could force you
at the last minute
into a drawing contest
even though
you’re really not in the mood
at least
not until you win

you could have a sub in science
and you could tell her, “We’re learning about chemistry!”
even though it’s really physics
so instead of E=MC2
you get to set off a soda and baking powder rocket

at lunch
your BFF is out sick
so
you resign yourself to eating lunch alone
or with the weird new girl
well, you think she’s weird, until it turns out
she’s from Turkey
knows five different languages
and can cook like nobody’s business

Today
is a Monday
a Boringday
boring at the beginning
but...
not anymore
