SXSW: Episode Nine from The Daily Buzz
Singer-songwriter Bobby Choy is no stranger to SXSW. This graduate of NYC's School of Performing Arts returns to the festival for a second time this year doing double duty as an artist in both the film and music portions. He had a lead role in Ktown Cowboys, which made its world premiere in Austin at SXSW. The film, based on the successful web series of the same name, follows a group of childhood friends who spend their free time in Los Angeles' Koreatown (aka Ktown).
Choy was also a headliner in the Seoulsonic Showcase at the Majestic on 6th Street performing as Big Phony. Never missing a beat, he also played guitar for No Brain during their performance. He contributed music to the film Twinsters, which also made its world premiere at SXSW. Choy talks about what drives him and how he survived on a allowance of $20 a week by sustaining a diet of McDonald's Fajita Hot Sauce packets and saltines.
