Winner of the Canal Plus Prize for her short film, CIRCLE LINE (2012), Shin returns to Cannes for the 2nd time with MADONNA which focuses on a nurse who works at a VIP ward at a private hospital. Shin was inspired to write this story of redemption and recovery which focuses on discrimination in a post-capitalist society. She talks about the struggle of these characters, why it was a challenge finding the right actress hard to cast the lead role for Madonna because there aren’t a lot of roles for full figured women in Korea, and how her former career as a schoolteacher prepared her as a director better than film school.
