The Best Songs Ever ... This Week, Aug. 10, 2018

Eddie Gaspar for KUTX
Natalie Prass performs during SXSW in March.

The staff at our sister station KUTX scour the earth to bring listeners the best music. Each Friday, they share three of their favorite songs on Morning Edition.

"Doesn't Matter" by Christine and The Queens

We'll start with one from Paris-based synth-pop outfit Christine and The Queens, led by songwriter Heloise Letissier, and the single “Doesn’t Matter,” from the forthcoming album Chris. The band’s second album is coming out next month. With an infectious danceable beat, “Doesn’t Matter” carries some heavy subject matter – like, contemplating one’s existence, the belief in an omnipotent being or if anything really means anything anymore. Bring it on.

"Short Court Style" by Natalie Prass

Up next: An artist who teamed up once again with producer Matthew E. White and his Spacebomb House Band to hone in on some tasty R&B, funk and disco vibes, Natalie Prass with “Short Court Style.” Some soft, smooth and sweet vocals on this one, and pretty much throughout her album, The Future and the Past. Natalie’s here to remind you: Love is hard work. Do it.

"Random Fearless" by Damien Jurado

Last but not least, a longtime favorite of mine, the master of supreme subtleties: Damien Jurado, with “Random Fearless,” from his self-produced album The Horizon Just Laughed. The tones on this track may be soft, but don’t be deceived; there’s an intensity there burning like amber amid those hushed vocals and stripped-down rhythms. And this is a fire that takes you places: You’re teleported in his gorgeous lyrical journey through human desire. “Random Fearless” is – dare I say it? – sexy.
