Dick Gregory, known for his sharp commentary on race relations during the 1960s civil rights movement, was considered a pioneer in using satire to address social issues.

On this edition of In Black America, producer and host John L. Hanson Jr. presents a tribute to pioneering comedian, civil rights activist, social critic and writer Dick Gregory, who passed away August 19, 2017, at the age of 84.

In Black America spoke with Gregory in the Spring of 2000, before his presentation at the annual Heman Sweatt Symposium on Civil Rights.

John L. Hanson is the producer and host of the nationally syndicated radio series In Black America. It’s heard on home station KUT at 10 p.m. Tuesdays and 6:30 a.m. Sundays — and weekly on close to 20 stations across the country. The weekly podcast of IBA, the only nationally broadcast Black-oriented public affairs radio program, is one of KUT’s most popular podcasts.
