The Spanish national team arrived in Austin Monday to compete in the Davis Cup quarterfinals at the Frank Erwin Center. The international competition stretches through the year as different countries compete in different venues across the globe. The contest here in Austin will leave one national team advancing to the semifinals while the other team returns home (or stays home, as the case may be) in defeat.
Spain is currently ranked number one. The U.S. is ranked sixth place among the remaining eight countries competing.
The event here in Austin lost some of its star power last month with the announcement that Spain's Rafael Nadal would not be competing for his country in Austin. Since then, Nadal lost at Wimbleton to rising tennis superpower, Novak Djokovic of Serbia.
While Nadal won't be here, tennis stars David Ferrer, Andy Roddick and others will be playing in Austin.
The Davis Cup Quarterfinals is scheduled July 8th to the 10th at the Frank Erwin Center.
