Texas will have more than 30 new laws on the books come New Year's Day, touching on everything from artificial intelligence regulation to property tax exemptions.

Lawmakers worked this year to address Texas' property taxes by increasing the tax break homeowners get on their property — and new proposals have already been made for the 2027 legislative session.

The lieutenant governor also doubled down on his stance that property taxes can’t be totally eliminated, putting him at odds with Gov. Greg Abbott.

Abbott signed Senate Bills 4 and 23 and House Bill 9 at the Robson Ranch Clubhouse in Denton. All three are part of Republican lawmakers' efforts to bring tax relief statewide to homeowners, seniors and small-business owners.

A law that went into effect last year requires central appraisal districts to periodically review exemptions homeowners have claimed.

The city will allow those who are 65 and older or have a disability and live in the home they own to keep more money from taxes.
