The Austin ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Thursday to begin accepting applications on Friday because it has a strong internal candidate: the current interim superintendent.

The school board voted unanimously Thursday to keep Matias Segura on through June 2024. Originally, the board had planned to hire a new superintendent by the end of May.

The school board is voting Saturday to finalize the list of qualities they will be looking for in the district’s next superintendent. Trustees are hoping to hire a new leader by the end of May.

Board members want the search to be open to the public, but that could scare off sitting superintendents who don't want their districts to know they’re looking for another job.

The district’s current chief of operations, Matias Segura, will take on the position. He played a key role in crafting the 2022 bond package that voters overwhelmingly approved last month.

Now that four new trustees have officially joined the Austin ISD school board, they are moving quickly to select a new interim superintendent. Their goal is to name someone for the job by Dec. 15.

Anthony Mays is leaving at the end of the semester. His replacement, and the eventual permanent superintendent, will be taking over while school districts continue to confront a teacher shortage and the effects of the pandemic.

The Austin ISD board of trustees hired Anthony Mays to be the interim superintendent in June following the departure of Stephanie Elizalde. He plans to begin his new role with Alief ISD in January.
