Update: The full University of Texas System Board of Regents has voted to move forward with a plan for the future of its flagship campus – including the medical school. The plan passed without discussion.
Update (May 8, 11:51 a.m.): A committee of the UT System Board of Regents approved an update to the university's master plan, including plans for UT's medical school, new teaching buildings and more. The plan could eventually move the Frank Erwin Center.
UT architecture professor Lawrence Speck, who is behind the master plan, could not specify on where a replacement for the Erwin Center might go. "We have been talking with the people in athletics, and they are certainly onto this, and they have some ideas, but that is something under study and will continued to be studied," Speck said.
The full Board of Regents will take up the master plan tomorrow.
Original post (9:30a.m.): A committee of the University of Texas System Board of Regents is scheduled today to discuss approving the campus and medical school master plan for UT-Austin.
The plan calls for building a hospital and research and academic buildings just west of the Frank Erwin Center – at least for now. In later drafts of the plan, the Erwin Center is potentially slated for removal to make more room for more medical school buildings. Here’s a building removal timeline.
If approved by the committee today, the full regents will consider the proposal tomorrow. The discussion is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
