Love scared her
because falling in meant breaking apart
and she'd been broken too many times.
Her eyes were still
drying from the last time.
Her trash can was still full
of tissues.
Poems were supposed
to bring closure, but didn’t
because she didn't know how to
help herself.
Maybe she wasn't afraid of love
Like she said.
Maybe she was afraid of
Falling because falling
used to mean
catching but now the drop is too high
And her heart beats are slowing
Because the pill bottles on her shelf
Aren't high enough.
She's gotten good at this lying thing
Saying her heart beats are the same
Because it wasn't the love that did this to her.
