AUSTIN, Texas – April 30, 2019 – KUT reporter Ashley Lopez and multimedia journalist Julia Reihs won Charles E. Green Awards for Best Reporter and Best Online/Special Content, respectively.

Sponsored by the Headliners Foundation of Texas, the Charles E. Green Awards honor Texas journalists who produce the “very best” news reporting and commentary.

Lopez was named Best Reporter in the radio category. She covers politics and health care, and is part of the NPR-Kaiser Health News reporting collaborative as well as NPR's political reporting collaborative. She has reported extensively on voting, voting rights and elections in Texas, as well as surprise medical bills and medical access for the poor and under-insured.

During a year of zero tolerance, family separations and migrant caravans, Reihs’s multimedia series “La Frontera – Stories Of Life Along The Texas-Mexico Border,” documents life along the Texas-Mexico border ahead of the 2018 elections. Through photos, video and written narrative, she illustrates how immigration is more than an election issue for residents of the Rio Grande Valley; it is omnipresent and deeply embedded in the lives of people who live there.

Each year, the Headliners Foundation, in cooperation with the Texas Associated Press Managing Editors (TAPME) and the Texas Associated Press Broadcasters (TAPB), sponsors an annual contest to identify the best works in journalism across the state for the previous year. Division winners in select categories of the Associated Press contests advance to compete for the overall distinction awarded by the Headliners Foundation of Texas.
