Hurricanes

The Atlantic hurricane season is now projected to have "above-normal level of activity" according to an updated forecast from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The storm is wreaking havoc on the island's already fragile power grid. Heavy rainfall and catastrophic flooding is continuing across the island.

"Things are all upside-down," making it hard for hurricanes to form, an expert says. But experts warn not to assume there's less risk just because the first months of hurricane season have been calm.

Two people have been confirmed dead, hundreds are missing and a million people were left without power after Ida made landfall on Sunday.

The forecast calls for 3 to 5 major hurricanes. The agency also said it's revising upwards what counts as the "normal" number of storms in a season.

Heavy winds knocked down trees and some homes lost power. But many residents around Port Arthur are breathing a sigh of relief after the storm passed without causing major damage to the area.

When the storm's eyewall moved onshore around 1 a.m. ET, forecasters told people in its path, "TAKE COVER NOW!"
