Paying for transportation infrastructure is big part of the special session underway now at the Texas Capitol. But, for some lawmakers, it's not a big enough part.
Senate Joint Resolution 2 would send some oil and gas tax money into a new fund, but everyone agrees that much more money is needed.
State Rep. Drew Darby,R- San Angelo, is already looking ahead to the next regular session in two years. “I think we’re going to have a full-blown crisis in how we fund roads by that time. I think you’re going to see an industry in peril," Darby said.
The effort to boost transportation funding would also include more money for rural areas across Texas.
If lawmakers approve SJR 2, the creation of a new transportation fund would need final approval from Texas voters this fall.
