Weekend Road Closure Round-Up

Photo by Jesse Wang for KUT News

It's another busy weekend in Austin, but before you hit the roads here’s a round-up of road closures and other traffic news for this weekend.

Construction continues this evening on several connecting fly-over ramps at the intersection of I-35 and Ben White Boulevard. The southbound I-35 frontage road will be closed between the intersections of the eastbound and westbound US 290 frontage roads.

Traffic will be diverted down the US 290 frontage road to the turnaround at Congress Avenue. Ben White Boulevard will also be narrowed between Burleson Road and South Congress Avenue to allow one lane of traffic in each direction. You should also be prepared for detours at the intersection of Rio Grande and 24th street. The intersection will be closed for improvements as part of the Rio Grande Street Reconstruction till 6 am Monday. The project is part of the 2006 Bond Program that includes utility upgrades and streetscape improvements from MLK to 24th Street.

Austin Waterwill be closing parts of Cesar Chavez and Brazos Streets for sewer inspections this weekend. On Saturday, the two right lanes  Cesar Chavez Street at South First Street will be closed from 9 am to 4 pm Two eastbound lanes will remain open and one lane will be provided for a right turn lane.

On Sunday,   the cul-de-sac at the end of Brazos Street south of Cesar Chavez Street will be closed to traffic from 9 am to 4 pm but businesses will be accessable.

Team USA will be taking on Spain this weekend in a Davis Cup quarterfinal at the Frank Erwin Center. Expect extra congestion around the center through Sunday. No left turns will be permitted from Red River Street to Martin Luther King Blvd. to protect heavy pedestrian traffic. As well, the far west lane on Trinity Street nearest to the Trinity Parking Garage will be coned off to provide an easier flow of cars leaving the garage.

Parking improvements were completed on South Congress Avenue yesterday.  The city added approximately 60 back-in and parallel parking spaces to the area, in addition to repaving South Congress and drawing new lane guidelines.
