Getting out of town this weekend to join relatives for Thanksgiving?
Plan wisely – it’s one of the busiest travel days of the year. According to a report by AAA Texas, 3.4 million other Texans will also be traveling for the holidays.
Most travelers will leave for their trip on Wednesday, Nov. 27 and return on Sunday, Dec. 1. For those going out of town, 3.1 million plan to travel by car.
With so many drivers on the road, it’s important to drive safely. Last year’s Thanksgiving weekend saw 107 car wrecks, and APD Chief Art Acevedo says that the department hopes to stem that number this year by launching its “Arrive Alive” campaign. This means that APD will have all available officers on patrol between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Eve, and watching for dangerous driving.
“Take ownership for the safety of your neighbors, your friends, and people that you may never meet by doing what you can do to control this,” Chief Acevedo says. “Make it a weekend without death and injuries.”
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport is seeing crowds of people traveling for the holidays.
Airport officials say about 35,000 people flew in and out of ABIA last Thanksgiving eve. And they expect this year to be even busier.
Officials say passengers should arrive 90 minutes before their flights and check flight status before heading to the airport.
