UT Police Seek Renewed Public Safety Accreditation

Mose Buchele, KUT News

The University of Texas Police Department is undergoing a review of its services. Assessors with the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) are examining all UTPD operations to determine whether the department deserves accreditation.

Accreditation isn't mandatory but is seen as a representation of public safety excellence.

UTPD first earned CALEA accreditation in 2007.

As part of the accreditation process, UTPD is holding a public information session. People are invited to attend and make comments on the department.

The meeting is today at 1 p.m. at the UTPD training room, located at 2201 Robert Dedman Dr. on the UT-Austin campus.

Those wishing to submit comments may also call (512) 232-5460 today between 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. Comments may also be mailed to:

CALEA 13575 Heathcote Blvd, Suite 320 Gainesville, VA 20155-6660

In-person and telephone comments are limited to 10 minutes and must address UTPD’s ability to meet CALEA’s standards.

The assessors will also review written materials, conduct interviews and visit locations to witness compliance with CALEA standards.

When the assessors complete their review, they will report to the commission to decide if UTPD meets the standards for accreditation.

The accreditation is for three years. If accredited, UTPD must submit annual reports of continued compliance with CALEA standards.
