An event in Austin today aims to bring together Texas leaders in business, law enforcement and faith to talk about immigration.

Texas Summit: Taking a New Consensus on Immigrants and America to Congress is happening from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Austin.

KUT's Laura Rice talked with the co-founder of the Texas Immigration Solution, a conservative, non-profit group seeking market-based changes to the country’s immigration policies. He's speaking at today's event.

As an owner of a restaurant in Houston, I've spoken with many of my Hispanic employees and their families. A lot of people that they know are not necessarily wanting citizenship right off the bat. They just want to have a legal status to be here and work. So I think we're putting a lot of emphasis on [a pathway to citizenship] but it is something that I believe needs to be a part of the equation, it needs to be talked about. But the devil is in the details. And that's one of the reasons we're having our conference here this week is to talk about solutions and ways we need to go about this.

Laura first joined the KUT team in April 2012. She now works for the statewide program Texas Standard as a reporter and producer. Laura came to KUT from the world of television news. She has worn many different hats as an anchor, reporter and producer at TV stations in Austin, Amarillo and Toledo, OH. Laura is a proud graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia, a triathlete and enjoys travel, film and a good beer. She enjoys spending time with her husband and pets.
