A Texas Senate committee will take up a bill this morning that regulates and restricts abortions, which has sparked people on both sides of the bill to organize events at the Capitol to express their opinions.
Participants at a rally this evening on the south steps of the Capitol this evening have a message.
"To those inside the Capitol that Texans are indeed pro-life," Everett said. "And that we want them to vote pro-life for that’s the value Texans stand for. Texans want to stop the horrors going on in Texas. We are going to win this battle -- we’re the only ones having babies."
Everett is with The Heidi Group, one of the organizers of a rally at 7 p.m. tonight in support of House Bill 2 and Senate Bill 1. These are measures that would ban abortion at 20 weeks of gestation and would require clinics to adopt ambulatory surgical center standards.
People from outside of Texas – including former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar of TLC’s 19 Kids and Concerned Women for America’s president will also participate.
Those opposed to the bill will counter with a march down Congress Avenue that begins at 8 p.m.
"The issue with this bill is that it completely violates the constitutional right to practice an individuals’ free choice. This is what this protest is primarily about, beyond the scope of abortion it’s about choice and it’s about free will," said Kristian Caballero, who organized the march.
It begins at the gates by 11th and Congress. It then goes south on Congress to Cesar Chavez to Lavaca and then back to the Capitol.
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will host a public hearing on SB 1 this morning at 10 a.m.
